I couldn't imagine getting lost in the woods and not knowing what to do. Not knowing how to start a fire or fish for food. I feel like every student should have to take an outdoors class in middle school or high school. If I had an opportunity to make a new elective at my high school, I would make it a outdoors type class to get students familiar to survival tactics.
Surprisingly, only 17% of people think they could start a fire with flint out in the wilderness. This is something that the percentage should be higher. Under certain circumstances fire would be needed in plenty of ways, cooking food, keeping warm, and possibly keeping dangerous animals away from your camp. There are other skills that can be essential to surviving in the wild. Fishing can be a big one. Someone can go fishing for food, and cook it over the fire that they had made. This will provide food for at least one meal. I think that these skills plus many more can benefit someone in many ways. If someone is camping, lost in the woods or even teaching others.
Skills like this are important and should be taught in schools. They should be required at least one semester and then the other years turn into an elective for individuals who want to keep learning essential skills. So if I was given the opportunity to bring a new class to my school, an outdoors and survival class would be my first pick,
