Get Down and Give Me Twenty by Brady - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I am always thinking about what it would be like for kids to be in control of their parents. What if we got to boss them around and tell them what to do for a day. If teachers and students switched roles, I would be a teacher of physical education. When a teacher gets hostile with me, I think ‘what gives you the right to tell me what to do?’ Then I remember that the law does. If one of my students made me angry, they would be running sprints or doing pushups. I would take full advantage of them having to respect my authority. A gym teacher would also be good for me, because sports are my passion. However, seeing a teacher that I don’t like do pushups at my command would be something kids only dream of.
Most people think of gym class as fun and easy, but if you were in my class I would make you eat your words. Being in shape is extremely important. It should be made a top priority. It is somewhat embarrassing to live in what is known as “one of the fattest countries in the world.” Lots of kids are overweight. It is not necessarily their fault, but they should at least try to do something about it. Gym teachers have a great opportunity to help kids lose weight, and most of the time they don’t take advantage of it. If I was the gym teacher, my goal would be to have none of the students in my class overweight. If anyone argued about doing something, I would make them do double. One of the most important aspects about getting in shape is your mentality. If you believe that you can do it, than you can. If you don’t think you can do it, you probably can’t.
I would love to become the teacher, for at least one day. Just so “my students,” know what it would feel like to not be in charge for once. They would have to listen to what I have to say, or they would not pass my class. Being a teacher of science or math would be cool too, but a gym teacher can actually make you do pushups or run sprints. The feeling of telling your teacher to “get down and give you 20,” and have them actually listen to you would be amazing.
