Express yourself and feeling free by Blake - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If roles were reversed, which academic subject would I teach. I would want to be a drama teacher. This is a world of electronic. People are losing the power of what face to face communication really is. So, when we are forced to leave the safety of our electronics to complete our day to day duties, chores or responsibilities, children, teenagers and adults have lost the want to communicate with the public. This has become an epidemic that needs to change.

Let me first explain that I was a very shy kid. Standing up to do an oral report in school was devastating. Keeping my head in my books or in an electronic was all I wanted to do. My mother saw this and pushed me to join the drama club. This was not what I wanted to do at all but I had no choice. When I first started in Middle School, it was a push to get me to want to even be there. When I realized after a long discussion with my mother that I had no choice, I started to participate. The drama teacher would talk about expressing yourself, putting your emotions into the part, using your imagination, being at the location that the script put you at. It was rocky at first. I was shy, I didn't want to express myself, especially to the public. However, little by little I did.

By, eighth grade I was a lead in the play and taking a full year of drama class including going to the afterschool drama club. Confidence in myself blossomed. Playing different characters was exhilarating. Continuing this into High School was my goal and I have enjoyed every play I have completed. I am a senior in High School with twenty plus performances under my belt. It has made me confident, disciplined, adventurous and learning the importance of communication with others. Getting my head out of the electronics. Living life.

I have met so many wonderful people participating in drama. I know it is not for everyone, however, if I was teaching drama as a subject, I would ask everyone to try it once. Explain to them how it changed my life. Explain the different jobs there are, not just being on stage but working the lights, music, curtain and many more opportunities.

My middle school and high school drama teachers have been an important part in pushing me to be successful in every character and every duty I was responsible for with each performance. The confidence has given me the freedom to want to succeed in many more adventures in my future.
