Leadership in an Untoward Generation by Beverly - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership skills are a necessity in everyday life. No matter the situation, things need to be structured and governed. Leading and following leadership are two very important qualities looked for in every college student. They allow us to possess a unique ability to either take charge when the situation calls for a leader. But more importantly, to know when to step aside and let someone else take command.
In college, we have leaders known as teachers and professors. They lead us to a better education and help us achieve our goals concerning education. We as students know to follow their lead. There are times in our college life when we take the lead. For example, we are sometimes put in charge of our attendance, homework and our class projects. Professors put us in charge of our attendance believing in the student to make good decisions as in showing up for class. In our classes our professors will put us in groups for a project and will have us elect someone to be the leader. Leadership skills are necessary in this situation, especially if the rest of the students in the group are not up to the challenge. Therefore the students who do not possess leadership skills are left out of that opportunity.
In other cases, like I said earlier, there are times where it is necessary to let others lead who are stronger in the topic and simply follow their lead. A good leader always knows when to let others take charge when needed. This will help prepare us for whatever career we acquire. There will be various projects that we first start off helping others who are in charge do. Then eventually, they will let us fly solo and take charge in an issue. We need to be strong enough and stable enough to do so.
These days, teens and young adults are known for being reckless and unstable, known as an "untoward generation". We need to be prepared in college to prove wrong all those we believe so. Leadership skills can and do improve everyone's lives, even if they are not in college.
