The Way I See It... by Becky - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I have actually considered becoming a teacher and it is what I’m planning on going to college for. Teaching is not something I had ever thought of doing before this year. I do not like speaking in front of people and that has been challenging for me in high school. However, I love art. Art has been my favorite subject for a long time. I want to make a difference in the lives of students, to share a love of art with them, and be able to help people to appreciate art.
When I was about ten, I began attending an art school once a week and my life has been completely different because of it. My art teachers made a big difference in my life. I want to make a difference in the lives of students the way that my teachers made an impact on me.
If I become an art teacher, I would want feedback from my students. I want my classroom to be a collective effort. I don’t want to just give out assignments and get them back. I would want to have them come up with assignments too. Not that I wouldn’t have any assignments, because I would, but I want my students to get into it. To get creative. I want them to be able to love the art, and not have to stress about it. I want my students to feel comfortable in my classroom and never be afraid to ask questions.
An appreciation for art is something I would want to give students too. Even if they didn’t really enjoy creating art, I think everyone should be able to appreciate and respect it. Now I’m not saying everyone has to love every piece of art they see, but I think they should appreciate the work the artist put into it and they should be respectful of that.
So to answer the question, if I was a teacher I would teach art. Art is always something I’ve enjoyed and I want to explore it more. I’ve known for a while I want to have a profession in art and I want to see where that will lead me.
