Don't Forget To Breathe by becca - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could give a younger student advice about college knowing what I know now, I would tell them to just take it one day at a time. You don’t need to figure everything out your first week or even your first year on campus. College is a learning experience for a reason; in the next four years you’ll find out more about who you are more than all of the 18 years before it. You’ll make some new friends and lose touch with some too. You’ll find that you’ve never been this free, and make some mistakes but that is how you will learn.
There are only so many hours in a day to get things done and it is okay to take some time for yourself when needed. A good rule of thumb to follow is, it’s okay to ask for help; whether about school work or mental health issues. Always put mental health first before any grade. It’s okay to not be okay. It is okay to ask for help from a counselor or a tutor when you need it. They are there to help you and they won’t bite, I promise.
You should never be ashamed about not learning something the first time around and asking for help can only help you not hurt you. It will only hurt you if you don’t ask for help. I would tell them to not be so hard on themselves and that college is a learning experience and that it is okay to make mistakes. Don’t forget to breathe.
