Why I Chose Marketing and Law by Bailey - February 2025 Scholarship Essay
Throughout high school, I’ve had the chance to take on leadership roles that have helped me grow. For three years, I was Vice President of the Student Organization, where I worked to support my classmates and organize school events. As captain of my school’s volleyball team in 10th and 12th grade, I helped keep my teammates motivated and made sure we worked together toward common goals. These experiences taught me valuable skills like communication, responsibility, and teamwork. I’ve also had the opportunity to mentor incoming freshmen, which was a rewarding part of my high school journey. Additionally, I played travel volleyball from 9th to 12th grade, where I was captain in 10th grade, further strengthening my leadership abilities.
Beyond sports, I’ve been involved in several extracurriculars, including Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the Singers Club, and the National Honor Society. I’ve held leadership positions in these organizations, such as serving as Vice President of the Student Organization and currently as Secretary of the SUNY Concert Choir. These roles have given me the chance to help organize events and connect with peers while learning how to lead in different environments.
I’ve always been interested in business, but taking a marketing class last year really sparked my curiosity. It made me want to learn more about how businesses grow and succeed. Through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at my school, I’ve had the opportunity to take courses like Financial Accounting, Business Law, and Personal Finance, which have given me a solid foundation in business. These courses, along with my involvement in FBLA, have deepened my interest in pursuing a career in marketing.
This semester, I also took a business law class that gave me a whole new perspective on how the law affects the business world. Participating in a mock trial where I defended a client taught me the importance of thinking strategically and how much I enjoy studying law. The experience showed me how law and business work hand in hand, and how combining both fields could be a really good career path for me.
These experiences in leadership, sports, and extracurriculars have helped me build a solid foundation for my future goals. I plan to major in marketing and minor in law during college. My goal is to gain the skills I need to succeed in marketing while also learning about law to help businesses deal with legal issues. I believe combining these fields will give me a unique set of skills that will help me become a successful corporate lawyer. I’m excited about gaining hands-on experience through internships and building connections that will help me land a job after graduation.
