Homelessness in Michigan by Bailey - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

When I drive through Pontiac, MI almost everyday to head to work, I see at least 2 homeless individuals holding signs that either read, "Help, Homeless," or, "Anything Helps," and sometimes both. I keep a bunch of protein bars in my glove box for those exact occasions. I roll down my window, and I give them 2 or 3 bars. I wish I could do more.

If I were to start a nonprofit organization, I would put all of my efforts into combating homelessness. The streets of Detroit, Flint, and Pontiac are riddled with people who need our help. I would organize food, clothing, and sponsor drives for those who are living on the streets. To distribute, I would use a car to store the goods and one by one, hand out the materials to people in need. It would also be beneficial to team up with Oakland HOPE and The Salvation Army to have stores readily available to distribute, as well. I would get the word out on Social Media, such as Facebook and Twitter, in order to recruit volunteers for the organization. Along with this, I would contact social work officials in order to find affordable or free housing and find suitable jobs.

Overall, I want to see the people I pass everyday get into a safe environment. I want them to be warm and live life to the fullest.
