Snowflake Smiles by Bailey - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

Serving others is an important part of bettering myself and my community. Through my high school’s HOSA chapter I have been able to volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Spokane. Our seasonal visits to the house include myself working with a small group to create exciting door decorations to brighten the halls for critically-ill children temporarily living there during treatment.
This small gesture may seem negligible, but the glow it brings to the eyes of these kids is priceless. Even the act of allowing a child to help hang a snowflake from their door paints a huge smile on their cheeks. Who knows, it may have been the highlight of their day. By creating these decorations, our club is able to show support and bring cheer into the lives of children with illnesses that no one should ever have to face. This poignant experience has strengthened my appreciation for life and shown me how even the smallest acts of kindness go a long way. I have been able to positively impact the lives of innocent, suffering kids, and bring smiles to their faces. I may not be able to fight their illnesses for them, but I work to provide them with another ounce of hope for the future.
