Early Bird Gets the Worm by Bailey - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

The simple question, “Are you a morning person or a night owl?” doesn’t always have a simple answering process. Yes, the answer requires one of the two choices, but the process of answering that specific question can be more complex. Maybe you stay up late at night, but that doesn't make you productive. Or maybe you wake up early in the morning, but you don’t have motivation to do anything. These thoughts went through my head as I asked myself, “Am I a morning person or am I a night owl?”
For the longest time, I believed I was a night owl. During my childhood years, I enjoyed staying up late and watching tv or even playing with my toys. I thought I was a pretty cool little kid because I stayed up until 11 o’clock at night. But I wasn’t actually doing anything productive. The only time I’ve actually done anything productive at night has been more recently, in my teenage years. I just turned 18 and the only thing I’ve truly done at night that’s productive is my laundry, and that’s only because I don’t have time to do it during the day because of high school and my job as a waitress.
I am a morning person. I hadn’t actually thought too much about what kind of person I am until I came across this essay prompt. I have realized that I am significantly more productive in the morning than at night. As said in the previous paragraph, I go to school all day and then I work right after that. By the time I get home, I am too tired to do anything but to go sleep and prepare myself to do the same thing the next day. In the mornings, I have the drive to do things quickly and efficiently - to do the things I didn’t do the night before because I didn’t have the motivation or will.
Through this essay, I have discovered that I am not a night owl, but I am a morning person. For many years I believed that I was a night owl because I enjoyed staying up late, but I was never productive in the time I spent awake late at night. I’m not saying that I enjoy getting up early in the mornings, but I find myself most energized and ready to do whatever I decide/what comes my way after I wake up refreshed. Simple answer, complex thought process. My simple answer is that I am a morning person, but the process I took to realize that I’m not actually a night owl took some thought.
