Dedication, Films, and Nostalgia by Bailey - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

In my yearbook I would add the quote,

"Some lose all mind and become soul, insane. Some lose all soul and become mind, intellectual. Some lose both and become accepted." - Charles Bukowski

This quote expresses my dedication, in addition to the fact that it is from one of my favorite movies.

Originally written in the novel, "You Get So Alone At Times That It All Just Makes Sense," this quote from Charles Bukowski has an all or nothing feel to it. I tend to act in a similar fashion since I prefer to not commit to something that I can not completely see through but if I do commit to something I don't let go. Because of this I haven't done as many things as kids my age but for all of them, namely dance and theatre, I have been taking part in them for over half of my life to the highest extent that I can, which includes taking part and volunteering for many shows at a community theatre and achieving national honors in competitive dance. Both of which are very time consuming and require lots of time commitment and energy commitment. This all while trying to maintain my high level of excellence that I require from myself in my academics.

However, that is just the most superficial reason of my quote selection. This quote was a line in one of my favorite movies, Beautiful Creatures (2013), which showcased the importance of literature as an escape through the local library being what connects the magic of their town to the rest of the country, as well as the importance of having people that care for you. I feel like these, a method of escape and people you can lean on, are super important in any facet of life but possibly the most important in the transition between high school and college. During this time there are so many changes and I personally feel comforted when I reflect on what I do have to help the transition go smoother.

The film also deals with a lot of magic which reminds me of the simpler times. For instance, when you and your best friends are running around the playground pretending to be top secret animal agents with elemental powers and access to extremely advanced technology in an attempt to save the world against the villains in your head. Times of reflection such as those always brighten up my day and give me hope for what the future holds.
