Extracurricular Activities Prepare Students for Life After School by Aziz - October 2015 Scholarship Essay
Band, basketball, swimming, theatre, these all come to mind when we think about extracurricular activities in schools. These activities hold the same importance as in-class academics like Math, English, and Science.
Extracurricular activities give students something fun to do when they do not have their heads buried in textbooks. Taking a break from school work. Participating in a sport, or debating on a debate team allows for the student to venture off and take a break from the stress induced by homework, assignments, and projects. Students can show their talents and abilities when they participate in these extracurricular activities. They might not be the greatest at solving mathematical equations, or a master at chemistry, but they might be a pro-football player, or an outstanding actor/actress.
The participation in one extracurricular activity should be a requirement to graduate. These activities can directly relate to and impact the student’s in-class productivity in a positive manner. These activities can teach leadership, and what is more important than establishing leaders for the future.
If a student were to join the high school newspaper staff, they would get experience holding down a job as a journalist, while in school, giving that student some background on job experience. If the student goes on to graduate with inattentions of studying journalism in college and becoming a reporter at his or her local newspaper, they would have that experience from when they were on their high school newspaper staff.
Extracurricular activities are not just some “extra activities” that a student does when they are in school, they prepare that student for what life has to offer. Teaching that student responsibility, leadership and giving them the experience they need for when they step out of the doors of their high school on graduation day and take their first step into the real world.
