What's Your Major? by Ayden - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
Choosing my major wasn’t an active decision, it was more like a feeling in my gut that told me I was in the right place. I can be indecisive at times or second guess myself, and I was feeling this way when exploring different college majors. As a high school sophomore, I wasn’t ready to start thinking about that stage of my life. At that time I was interested in fashion, interior design and finance but none of them felt like a sure thing. Overall, I just felt scared and lost. At the end of my sophomore year, an upperclassman told me to take psychology because it was really interesting. It was someone whose opinion I valued so I decided to enroll. As soon as I stepped into the classroom and saw all of the posters on the wall about different theories, I was very intrigued. I remember leaving that class on the first day and feeling so excited to do it all over again tomorrow. It didn’t take long to realize that this subject made me genuinely happy and it was a feeling I had not felt in any other class before. Some people question whether psychology should be considered a science. I believe that it’s not only a science but it is also an art. It is defined as the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. But it takes an empathetic and creative person to understand the emotions that affect our behavior so to me, that is an art. Also, I never knew so many things were connected through psychology. I was soon introduced to industrial organizational psychology during a lesson one day. As we highlighted and summarized the different types of psychology, this one caught my attention the most. This was a way for me to apply psychology to the business world. As soon as I got home I researched it more and told my parents all about it. This was the first time I felt like I had a calling to what I wanted my career to be. I plan on being able to work with companies and people to make work spaces a better place for efficiency, productivity, and most importantly help be part of a work culture where people can thrive. I want to become someone who can help bridge the gap between mental well being and the expired ways of some corporations. Knowing that I can make a difference in how people experience their everyday work lives motivates me to embark on this path even more.
