Financing to Learn by Ayana - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Saving. Saving. Saving. This year, my resolution is to save every bit of money I can, to the best of my ability. Learning how to finance your funds is an extremely important aspect of everyday life that isn't taught you in high school. It's a skill that not many people have. Financing and saving is something you learn from watching others and personal experience. Being a college student, you have no choice but to quickly pick up on the ways of which one should and shouldn't spend their money. It's a difficult task but, as a college senior, I needed to apply it to everyday life.
However, there's one particular reason as to why I honestly want to get into this habit of saving money, and that reason is traveling. I want to travel through volunteering. I want to visit countries and offer my services and knowledge and give it to people who need it. Not only do I want them to learn from me, but I also want to learn from them. Communication is a two-way street, as well as knowledge, and knowledge is power. There's only so much a classroom can teach. There's only so much my parents can drill into my head. But, everything else about life I need to learn on my own through experiences. I feel as though I can learn from people who aren't as privileged as I am, an American living in the United States of America. If I can discipline myself by not spending frivolously, working harder, pushing myself and being levelheaded, I can use myself as a template for my future.
