The Game of Life by Ayana - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
Some teachers make learning so serious, which is completely understandable, but teachers who make learning fun are the teachers I will remember for the rest of my life. My freshmen-year agriculture teacher was my favorite teacher in high school because she changed the way I viewed learning. She would incorporate games in the classroom for us to learn the material which would make the class period very fun. There were various games she would have us play which included Kahoot on our Chromebooks which is a game-based learning platform, Quizizz, which was a fun platform where we would study for exams, and she would also have us play hands-on games. An example of a game she had us play was the human knot which required us to use our problem-solving skills as well as having to work as a team. I truly enjoyed her class because not only did she teach us material to pass her class, but she also had us play games that would help us develop skills that we would need for the rest of our lives. My freshmen year agriculture teacher also helped me learn that learning new experiences are valuable to our lives. This is why outside of school I constantly learn that experiences teach us valuable lessons.
Any type of experience, good or bad, is beneficial to me. For example, I decided to pursue my education away from home which has been extremely hard for me, but experiencing life away from my family is crucial for me to grow as an individual. Being far from my family has taught me many life experiences because I am forced to be on my own and find fulfillment in the small things such as treating myself to a coffee because I finished an assignment. Another life experience that continuously teaches me things outside of school is by going outside and seeing the world, whether it’s outside of my house or traveling somewhere new. Going outside gives me a glimpse of what others are struggling with and teaches me that someone always has it worse than me, but they are still pushing through which means that I can do the same. Those individuals outside on the street teach me that humans are strong beings, and nothing is impossible. God put us on his beautiful Earth for a reason and we should truly take advantage of the life that we were given. How ironic that my favorite non-traditional way of learning is through games and I’m constantly learning that new experiences give me a purpose because life is like a game. Like games, in life, we are offered insight that we will be successful regardless of the obstacles that come along our paths and these challenges make us stronger by fostering resilience.
