The Death that Changed my Life for the Better by Ayana - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

Due to my grandfather’s death of a heart attack, I have chosen to pursue a career of becoming a cardiologist to give patients the chance to see their loved ones grow-up. This is something my grandfather will never get the chance to do with me. However, I use that to continue down a path or journey, I know he would be proud of. My educational and career goals begin after high school graduation; they are happening now. The first upcoming goal I have is to pass my certification to obtain my EKG, electrocardiogram, technician certification. With this certification, I plan to work at a local hospital for the summer between my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college. Above all, I plan to go to a small university that specializes in STEM. I am currently undecided on a major due to the fact that medical school does not require a major. Following my undergraduate work, I plan to attend medical school to obtain my doctorate. From there I aim to start on a career path that is centered on cultivating relationships while impacting many people in a positive manner.

Becoming a cardiologist takes skill and several years of schooling. When I developed this career goal in cardiology I began to do activities to prepare me for this. I started volunteering with the American Red Cross at blood drives and fundraising events for the American Cancer Society. I also volunteered with different age groups because I know my career will be with different age groups. I volunteer with children with The First Tee of Tennessee as a golf coach and volunteer and eventually worked at Brookdale senior living with elders.
