Accountability by Avery - February 2023 Scholarship Essay
Sometimes it is easy to get lost in blaming others for things that go wrong. It is easy to see the wrong doing of all the other people in your day-to-day life. In fact, I find myself focusing on this all too often. It can be easy for me to focus on the teachers that put material on tests that I don’t believe we covered, or my track teammates that didn’t run as fast as they could have in a race, or my parents or friends when they don’t behave as I think they should. However, I am learning, and trying to focus more on my behavior in each of these situations. After all, it is the only factor I can consistently control.
Some people believe accountability means admitting when you are wrong. However, I see it as more than that. To me accountability means owning my role in every situation, good or bad. I am learning to look for my accountability in each and every situation I encounter. In my education, that means focusing on how I can better prepare for classes or for tests. It means admitting when I didn’t pay enough attention in class and looking for ways to stay more focused. Accountability also means when I do really well; looking back at how I prepared and trying to incorporate those tactics on future assignments or tests. I am working to hold myself accountable for my success in my education, as I know I am the only factor that I can control and improve. I hope this translates to not only to better grades and better comprehension of material, but also to being a better person and one day a better professional!
