Reversed Roles by Avery - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed in a school setting and I was to be the teacher, I would choose to teach chemistry. I really enjoyed taking chemistry in school and excelled in the class. The subject requires good math and science skills, and I am most skilled in those two subjects. Good performance in a particular subject is important when considering teaching that subject. It is important the information be accurate and well-known by the teacher in order for it to be accepted. I am able to break down chemistry concepts in a way that would be easy to teach other students.
More importantly, I am most passionate about chemistry compared to other subjects which is extremely important when teaching. Teachers need to be passionate about what they teach in order for the students to get excited to learn the subject. So many students in the present generation could care less about learning. The reasoning behind this lack of caring points back to the teacher 99% of the time. For example, looking back at the teachers and classes I have had, the classes I enjoyed and learned the most from were the ones in which the teacher was super passionate about the subject and it came across in the classroom. I was more excited to learn when entering the classroom since their enthusiasm easily rubs off on students. Therefore, in choosing a subject to teach if roles were reversed, I would choose the subject I am most passionate about, chemistry.
