Pursuing Passion by Avalon - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

In ten years from now, I will be twenty eight years old. College will be a distant memory, and I will have earned my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and a graduate degree in either Biotechnology or Chemistry. I may even try to minor in Spanish. Hopefully, I will have earned a doctorate degree as well.
All of this is great and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to pursue further education, but it is not the most important part of my life. The most important aspect of my life in ten years from now is that I will be working in a field that I am deeply passionate about. Life is too short to spend doing something that does not possess your passion. I have gotten advice from so many people stuck in a rut and sleepwalking through life that I need to find what I love and pursue it, no matter what it may be. Getting my degrees and conducting doctorate research is what I know will allow me to ultimately spend my life pursuing my passion: medical research.
I fell in love with science in fifth grade when I was introduced to the periodic table of elements. I begged my mom to place me in a special science class during seventh and eighth grade which allowed me to go more in depth and hands on, especially with chemistry. Freshman year of high school, I was accepted into the Oncofertility Summer Academy which allowed me to enter the labs of local research facilities and even participate in some hands on research. This experience solidified my desire to pursue research and more specifically, medical research.
Ten years from now, I truly hope to be emerged in a field that I absolutely love working in. As of right now, that field is medical research. Nonetheless, I plan to stay flexible and if I fall out of love with the medical field I hope I can find another passion to pursue. In ten years, I hope to have travelled around the world for I am also exceedingly passionate about travel and culture. Maybe I will be married, maybe I will have children, maybe I will be single, there is no way to be sure of the future. However, one thing that I do know is that I will be doing something that possesses my heart and makes me happy. For me, life is meant to be lived in the moment; and if something does not make me happy, it is not with spending a moment on.
