The personal experience which led me to select my chosen major by Ava - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
What personal experience led me to select my chosen major? I can say it is not just one experience but two. I plan on majoring in biology to then go into optometry. Science based classes have always come easy to me and have been one of the few subjects I genuinely enjoy in school. I knew from the time I was in middle school I wanted to do something pertaining to science, but I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. Even though I wasn’t sure which way in science I would go, I knew I wanted to help out in the world, be it environmental, or with animals or people.
At the start of my junior year of high school my grandmother started to have extreme difficulty with her eyesight. Her decline in sight honestly, came over night and became a huge concern for everyone close to her. It hurt to see my grandmother cry over her world turning dark. I was frustrated she couldn’t get appointments quickly due to her medical coverage or the lack of available doctors. It annoyed me how she bounced from one specialist to another with long wait times, because there wasn’t an appointment available. Thankfully, my grandmother was able to get the help she needed and have her vision corrected, but I was still bothered by the time it took.
Why would it take so long? Why aren’t there enough optometrists or ophthalmologists to help my grandmother or others in her financial situation?! This bothered me and just happened to be the questions I kept asking right around the time I started to focus on what I wanted to major in when I go off to college. I did my research on what it took to become an optometrist or an ophthalmologist and found before you can go to school for optometry you must major in a science. Perfect, it’s just for me! Biology jumped at me along with being in a pre-optometry program.
There is no question I am going to major in biology. A subject I have always enjoyed and do well in and will lead me to helping others. Hopefully, I can do enough when the time comes to assist someone when their world starts to turn dark or blurred.
