Adulting at its Finance by Ava - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

We can all memorize Y=MX+B, but do we leave school remembering how to pay bills, knowing the importance of a credit score, or even how to manage money? After graduating high school, we get thrown into the world of adulting. Some of us move to college and live away from home, some hop on a plane a travel the world, and some settle down and move out into their own place. All of these are what adulting can look like as young adults, but can any of us say that we learned how to truly adult from high school? Our math classes would have only benefited those who wanted to go into a career that required that knowledge, or those who found a way to use the Quadratic formula every day.
Of course, the math we learned in high school had its flaws and benefits when it came to our state testing, but a crucial elective that should be a requirement in schools should be financing. In this class we can learn how to make money, how to budget and save, the importance of credit scores, mortgage, bills, and taxes. These are all topics that as people, we should know in order to live and be successful.
School is truly surrounded by constant testing and taking classes not only to satisfy requirements to graduate, but everything is surrounded by what we would want out of college. The thing is, not every student wants to go to college, they want to take different routes that do not need a degree. Therefore, this type of class would benefit every individual regardless of what they want outside of high school. You need to know taxes, you need to know about credit, you need to know about savings, and you need to know how to do everything efficiently so that way we are set up to thrive as adults!
