Where it all began by Ava - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

Before Isaac Newton was questioning the laws of gravity or Rosalind Franklin was unraveling the structure of DNA, they were children seeing the world in pictures and colors. Before they were writing equations and theories, they were drawing smiley faces and stick figures. All minds, great or not, started as children with a natural affinity for drawing. When given a pencil, young children are not inclined to write an essay or calculate an equation, instead, they are more likely to draw a pretty flower or scribble with vibrant colors. Art is one of the first subjects that kids are introduced to, and it carries the potential to help them grow and succeed in so many different aspects of their lives. This is why I believe there should be much more emphasis on art in school.
Creating artwork is one of the oldest and most impressive human feats to this day. The highest praised individuals back before and going into the Renaissance period were artists. It was and still is considered a depiction of wealth and prosperity to have a piece of art from a talented artist in your home. This is because art is seen as a pursuit that only people with a certain aptitude can undertake. It combines many different features that are seen across every aspect of the subjects seen in school, one being motor skills. Art teaches fine motor skills and can help with neater writing and improved organization. It can help a student develop better language skills and social skills that they will carry with them throughout their lifetime. Most schools have implemented art programs for their elementary-aged students but I believe that art should be much more emphasized even as the kids get older.
Art is also the gateway to creativity. As a child, people much like myself are free to express their creativity through careless crayon drawings. I think that this should be more emphasized throughout one's life by shining some light on the possibilities that come with engaging in art and putting your mind at work. I think that people treat it more as a leisure activity rather than something that can help us grow and develop both character and skill, and I don’t necessarily agree with that point of view. Art has helped me develop into the person I am today, by teaching me problem-solving skills I carry forward into my schoolwork and personal life. Art has helped me see things at more than face value. I'm more aware of depth and texture not only as a visual but as a concept in daily interactions and problems I may face.
Art has greatly impacted my life and how I perceive the world. I credit the way I’ve grown as a person in both character and creativity to my engagement in art throughout the years. I believe that art can help foster well-rounded individuals with a mind open to creating new things and thinking in an innovative and outside-the-box way. A variety of art classes should be more emphasized in school, especially as kids enter high school. This will benefit not only the students in their artistic careers but in their academic and personal lives as well.
