Marley and Me by Autumn - October 2020 Scholarship Essay

Marley and Me was a movie I'd seen so many times throughout my life, and it never failed to make me cry. I really enjoyed how it represented a lot of themes and symbolism between a man and dog, loyalty, friendships, hardships, and life in general. But of course, a lot of these stories have a sad, but inevitable, ending.
A mom of a friend I have said she doesn't like a lot of books, but she was so into Marley and Me and cried each time she read it. A lot of books don't surprise me or make me feel a lot of emotion for the characters, so I thought I would give it a try. I knew what happened, I wasn't gonna cry right?
That's where I was wrong. The first time I read it I was sobbing and my mom heard me from the floor below, bewildered that I was so emotional. The second time, I read it and stopped at the sad chapter, not picking it up after for at least a few months. I thought starting on the sad chapter wouldn't make me sad, because I knew what it was going to contain, but I was wrong again.
It did make me happy at a lot of points too. I almost couldn't contain laughter after reading about Marley's puppy stages, his antics, and the author's witty writing. I would smile to myself reading about how though he was a bad dog, he was the best friend a man could have.
The book is so simply written, but the author has a way with words that makes you feel how he does. It's a very good book I would recommend to anyone who hasn't found their book.
