Poetry Professor by Autumn - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor, I would, without a doubt, be a poetry professor. Explaining the different types of poetry, teaching students how to create each one in their own style while focusing on the basic rules, would be perfect for someone such as I. I've always found poetry as an interesting subject throughout the time I've had in school but I was also the student who always found herself more immersed in it than my other classmates. I always found myself to have a stronger connection to it than anyone else I knew, which led me to be more involved in my creativity. And if I had the chance, I would definitely use my own poetic abilities to teach prospective poets.
I'd figure passion would really have to be involved in my teachings. What would poetry be without passion and the things that happen around us? That's one thing I would definitely focus on. There are many things in the world that can inspire many works, whether in reality or in your own dream world. To me, teaching poetry is teaching someone how to channel their desires, needs, outlooks on things, etc., that they can't explain through verbal communication. I believe that poetry also shows and teaches people how to be human.
If you're showing someone how to create poetry, you're showing them how it's okay to be vulnerable. This is another thing I'd want to teach my students. Sometimes, poetry is blunt, sometimes it leaves you feeling soft to the touch. But others can make you feel other-worldly, alive, burning with wants that you know can make you feel like the most confident person around. Poetry is a type of power that when used correctly, can be a great tool in creating things that you would want to see.
Finally, I believe if you're using your creativity in a poetic way, you're expressing your own sense of self and your own strength. By doing that, you're being your authentic version of yourself. This helps others understand where you're coming from on a subject that you want to express. And this would also show that you don't care what others think when expressing how you really feel about something. If I were a poetry professor, I'd teach that poetry should be something that doesn't make people care about any types of judgment.
