New Elective Class by Austin - February 2022 Scholarship Essay

Learning and respecting people’s cultures are a necessity for a society that is so culturally diverse. That is why I believe it would be essential to create an elective where you are able to learn and experience other cultures with respect to them in high school.

In this new elective class, students would go into a deep dive of as many cultures that could be fit in a year. Students would be learning dances, food, physical identity, and many other things which could broaden one's level of understanding of cultures. In my experience, I have learned more about other cultures through social media than I have in school. I believe there should be more exploration of cultures in school.

Now how would this class benefit the students? Well, I believe it would remove ignorance from students of other cultures. I have found times when I have seen someone perform or eat something that I believed was odd, but then as time passes I have realized that these things all have a history and meaning behind it. I believe that this class would be able to play a role in removing that odd feeling and replacing it with the feeling of respect.
