Teacher That Guided The Path For My Life by Austin - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

I have always had a knack for mathematics. Not only was math my best subject, but it was also my favorite. Although, I often wondered where my math skills would take me. Finally, my AP Statistics and AP Calculus teacher recommended that I explore the field of actuarial mathematics. I started to research the career and instantly saw my future.
I plan on attending the University of Michigan with a major of Actuarial Mathematics and a minor in Business. The University of Michigan has one of the most prestigious Actuarial Mathematics departments in the world, so I was delighted to have been accepted into their program. I have the intentions of one day becoming an actuary.
An actuary is “a person who compiles and analyzes statistics and uses them to calculate insurance risks and premiums.” In order to become an actuary, it is necessary to complete rigorous schooling, along with passing a series of extremely rigorous and costly actuarial exams. For the Society of Actuaries examinations, it is an unwritten rule that four hundred hours of study is required for each four hour exam. In order to become an actuary, ten to twelve exams need to be passed, so that leaves several thousand hours of study.
Becoming an actuary will be well-worth the hard work. Insurance companies help protect people and businesses from catastrophic loss, and the job of an actuary is to analyze and calculate these risks. This gives people and businesses the confidence to grow. In this aspect, actuaries play a crucial role in the stability of society. The career offers great fulfillment: having the opportunity to solve problems and have an impact on the community. I can use my talents with mathematics and my natural leadership ability to have a meaningful, positive influence on society.
It will be my work ethic that will help me achieve my dreams. I have always been a dedicated worker, and that will never change. I will accomplish my goals, and one be a very productive member of society. It will certainly not be an easy path, but my conscientious mentality will drive me to be the most successful person that I can be.
If my teacher wouldn't have informed me of this career field, I probably would have never learned about it. I am thankful that he has helped me find the perfect fit for my future.
