Spring, Texas: Where I Am Raised by Audrey - May 2019 Scholarship Essay
Ever since my junior year of high school, I have accumulated a deep interest in the environment and the ways us as humans impact it. By doing some research, I became awakened by the detriments of the many factors that have been exponentially deteriorating the Earth by the day. It is certainly not a new topic of conversation, but I am glad that more people have gained awareness of the effects our daily actions have on the planet. This being so, I am optimistic the human population will make great changes.
The grant of $10,000 may come to serve the planet, but me, being one person, can downscale into my hometown of Spring, TX. If I were given $10,000, I would buy 100 $40 Insignia 2-Way Paired Indoor/Outdoor Speakers. Because Spring, TX is 23.6 square miles, that divided by 100 would give me 4.23 square miles, and so, I would place a pair of speakers every 4.23 square miles. That leaves me with $6,000 left in my budget. With that $6,000, I would purchase 250 Simply Green Solutions 10-pack Reusable bags. To evenly disperse them, I would choose our local Texas grocery store, H-E-B, to carry them. Since there are 6 H-E-B's in the Spring area, I would bike around Spring (my bike can handle a lot of weight) to place about 416 reusable bags per store.
Now, to put the speakers to use, I will issue a town-wide broadcast through blue-tooth calling action against plastic bags. My announcement will be so moving that people will go running to their local H-E-B supermarkets to pick up a free reusable bag for their household.
Only about 2,500 people would receive a free bag, but since the average number of people per household is 4, that means 10,000 families in the Spring Area would own a bag, meaning 10,000 families would have the incentive to cut down their means of plastic (this incentive would be very strong due to their motivation from my speech through the speakers)!
With the $1,000 left, I would use it to properly advertise to the population of Spring on 4 billboards (each advertisement averaging $250) to give them the green light to pick up any pair of speakers they see, to prevent the harm of E-waste in the environment.
The town of Spring has gifted me with my childhood and the majority of my fond memories and for that, I am forever grateful. The least I could do is fill their hearts with inspiration to change the daily habits that could greatly impact the environment and to do it alongside their families. And also, with their mindful acts, they have the chance to pick up a quality sound-system too. With this $10,000, Spring, TX would be the on the list of one of the most environmentally mindful towns in the Houston area!
