Personalizng Study Guides by Aubrey - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
Some of my high school teachers would hand out study guides; however, I found it more effective to create a personal study guide from information the teacher gave us during class. The majority of my teachers would tell us what is important to know and comprehend for each test during class time. In order for me to do better on my tests, I made a personalized study guide for each teacher. By doing this, I became better at picking up on the more important information given in class instead of filling out the questions they asked on their own study guides.
Creating a personal study guide gave me beneficial results by helping me retain more of the information that each teacher gave. Once completing a personalized study guide, I could quiz myself on my knowledge and see if I had retained any of the information given for each class. To satisfy my competitive side, I would get together with some of my classmates or a parent and do a trivia game from the personal study guide as well as the one the teacher handed out. In the end, all of us would do better on our tests. Study guide trivia games also helped us retain more of the information so that we wouldn’t have to cram for every end-of-term exam.
Making a personal study guide also benefited me because when I involved myself enough to create my own study guide, I paid more attention in class and was always able to retain the more vital information. The study guides trained my brain to pick up on important information that my teachers gave.
