New Year's Resolution by Atiya - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Only 8% of New Year’s Resolution are achieved. A couple years ago I was among the slight 8% minority. Back then, the “new me” resulted to never bringing her phone charger to class. It was simple yet effective. I was afraid of my phone dying in the middle of class due to it’s poor battery status. I was forced to stay off of my phone and pay attention in class or to those around me. It was the only resolution that lasted and even currently I still don’t bring a charger to class although my new and improved iPhone 6 has a better battery life than my iPhone 4.
This year’s resolution surrounds social media and cutting back on my usage of Apps such as Twitter, Instagram, Vine etc. I only use social media sites when I’m bored and want to kill time; turns out the most frequent time I’m bored is when I'm in my classes which then makes me pull out my phone, open the various apps and scroll down to see people’s posts. Although it entertains me for a short time, it is still a big distraction that causes lose of focus and attention in class, leaving me clueless and to a point irritated for being in boring classes.
My resolution isn’t aimed to help fix my boredom. It’s to help fix my attention span in order to understand everything that is going on in class and not be confused and befuddled. The major outcome of this would be an improvement in class participating but the optimistic outcome of my courageous New Year’s Resolution would be that by understanding the happenings in the classroom, it could somehow spark an interest for the dull subjects and overall make me a better student that the teachers admire and use as examples of “good student behavior”
