The Growth of a Student by Asia - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

When you first enter High School your considered as many people say “ buckets or Tadpoles”. You're the new student about to begin a new journey. People say they learned and meant the best people in High School. Speaking for myself I learned the most in English. In English you uncover thousands of different worlds. Those worlds made me into who I am today.
In High School English class isn’t just reading. It's about deciphering the book as much as possible and discussing what you discovered. Reading all the different types of genre opened my eyes in many ways. My junior year in High School I read The Great Gatsby. In that story I saw so many symbols and themes. I learned from that story that as you sit around hanging on to the past the clock keeps ticking and you will get left behind. The Great Gatsby made me realize that I need to stay on top of things because I will fall behind and not succeed.
English helped me grow as a student because it helped me realize things I would not discover on my own. During discussions I listened to what others took from a story and learned so much. With English class I discovered the real world. I learned about things that happened in real life. When I first read The Kite Runner I never knew what happened to the civilians in Afghanistan. That book made me do more research and I learned how many families were lost and what was really happening. Furthermore today when people speak to me about there problems I think back to things I read and heard to help them. If it was not for English I wouldn’t be who I am today.
