The Difference by Ashton - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

There are a few things that can be said about this topic. Leadership is needed but at the same time is not. There are different types of people in the college life. The first type is the natural born leader. The next type is the behind the scenes leader, and the third is the standard follower. Each one of these students have specific qualities.

The first student is the natural born leader. This student does great with group projects and final design projects, and other events that may take place during the school year. This is because they mentally are able to manage people and have high communication skills. These students are quick to start the task and work very hard to achieve more than what is expected. Leadership skills for this student are not needed because the student already has them naturally and will use them.

The second student is a hidden leader. This student does well in school and has no problems working in groups and other events. This student is still a hard worker but may not have the communication skills to direct people in the way they need to go. While he works with others and learns how to communicate better he will become a great leader at a later time in his career. This is where leadership skills are great for the student’s success. The student will be able to grow and mature at a faster rate in his field and allow for a better leadership role down the road.

The last student is the standard student. This student does his work and does what he feels is good enough. The student will eventually graduate as long as all the requirements have been met. The need for leadership skills is not available with this student however that is not a bad thing. Not everyone is born to be a leader or meet a high level of management. The world is majority blue collar workers that are great workers. These people just are not able to lead and make big changes.

By looking at these three different student levels, we see that leadership skills are not necessary for college success, because not every student has the leadership abilities. Some students may learn and develop general leadership skills while in college, which is a part of the college learning experience. Leadership skills are great for the students who already have the ability to lead and help others.
