The benefits of a community interaction class by Ashton - February 2022 Scholarship Essay

When attempting to conjure up a new elective class, it can be quite a daunting task. What many schools overlook is the opportunity that lies surrounding them, right in the community. Erasing the disconnect between students and the community would be beneficial for everyone involved. Not only would it result in growth of each and every student involved, but it would also make strides in growth of the community as a whole.
The first question coming to anyone’s mind when first thinking of this idea is how and what does this entail? The answer is not simple as it would be ever-changing. Year to year the so-called “coursework” would change. If volunteer service is needed, then that could be met. It could also mean allowing students to sit in on meetings or big events happening in the community when possible. The students could listen in or even offer a different opinion coming from the mindset of a younger person. Students could interact with parts of the community that they may not ever have had the opportunity to speak with without guidance involved. Bringing a class like this into the picture would offer many great benefits for the students in many different ways.
If students were given this opportunity, they would be more informed, more involved, and feel more as though their thoughts and opinions hold value within their community. A class like this would keep students in the loop as to what is happening right at their back door. They would be more aware of changes being made around them and what effect that may have on their life. Students would also be more involved in decision making in their community. In turn, this would give students a major boost of confidence. Knowing their contributions can make an impact could be the exact motivation that they need to grow confidence to speak up more often. This spike in student involvement would make community growth inevitable.
Once students’ opinions are integrated into community decisions, everyone, young or old, will begin to see benefits. Student opinions can offer a completely fresh mindset on many different topics and decisions. A young perspective on different issues can be crucial to seeing progression. It is also beneficial to utilize volunteering within this class. If something needs done within the community, this class would offer plenty of helping hands. This class would also lead to a much more informed community as a whole.
Overall, a community involvement class would offer a unique, new opportunity for students to utilize. Growth would be seen in many different areas in not only the students, but also the community. This type of class should be something that many schools begin to consider.
