Passion for Veterinary Medicine by Ashton - July 2019 Scholarship Essay

According to the online Miriam Webster dictionary, passion is an “intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction” (Passion). Several people have certain passions for certain things. For instance, mechanical work, pharmaceuticals, and even drawing pictures of landscapes are a couple passions that are felt by some people. For me, my passion is education, and animals of course. Animals have always been important to me, so giving back to them by learning more and more about them in order to help in any way I can ignites the passion I have for each species. I always try to find out ways to learn and study more about all animals. The closer I get to the end of my studies at Michigan State University in the Animal Science department, the more excitement and passion I feel for my future.
Animals have always been in my life whether it was on a farm or in random places. Growing up, my grandparents had farms with cattle and horses, which drew the veterinarians out to check up on all of them. I remember watching each vet closely and mentally taking notes on what they were doing. My interest in becoming one myself started to grow at the young age of five years old. It has always been my dream to become a large animal veterinarian because of the amazing things I have seen from each vet that traveled to my grandparents’ farms. Since my dream started at that young age, I have shadowed vets, helped with shots and treatment of animals at the Jackson Area Career Center in Jackson, MI, worked with countless farm animals, and began studies at MSU. There were and are so many things to learn about this field and I enjoy every second of learning all parts of it.
Education is the key to becoming a veterinarian. Long hours of shadowing, working with animals, and constant studying come into play when thinking about this occupation. The learning road starts early because you have to be completely sure it is what you want, since the learning path is so long and exhausting. It does not scare me, though. My passion for education about animals is so strong that I am willing to do whatever it takes to achieve the high standards of this occupation.
Passion for education stems from the will to do something you want to do. I want to become a large animal veterinarian because I have this passion to practice medicine for animals. Education is the most crucial step to achieving this as well as several other passions other people have. Learning how to do all the little things is very important so you know how to do what you need to do. Passion for education is extremely important to achieving all of my goals in life, the most important and exciting is being a large animal veterinarian. If I know I can do it, I know I can do it through education.
