civil engineer by ashton - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

As I drove up to the house all I could smell was freshly cut wood, the smell was so strong it overpowered my coffee. Shortly after I got there I found myself with cold metal in one hand and damp wood in the other. The ladder sinks into the pea stone everytime i go up it holding my end of the floor joist. Up and down all day, all weekend, but by the end all the joists were up. Next was the plywood floor. Screwed and seladed the floor then it was on to the walls. We framed and lifted up all the walls for the house then it was onto the garage. We did not do the trusses or the roofing or the other trades. I've been helping building this home for Marc Kasabasik from beginning till the end everything from floor joists to siding the home. I learned a lot from doing this. I learned time management from it I was working at McDonald's, going to high school, doing the home, helping around the house, doing other side work and I still has time to play football and hang with friends. I also learned how to frame and build a house and other skills.
9 in the morning to 5 at night Saturday and Sunday that was my weekend at the house with my friend that was helping and Marc the homeowner and Civil Engineer. I spent many hours there working on his house, the house is beautiful but not done yet. The skills I learned there will be with me for the rest of my life and I will remember them and use them later in life. I enjoyed working with my hands and problem solving skills that will be useful later. My interests in civil engineering are what push me to go to Lawrence tech University
