Dinner with President John Adams by Ashton - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I had to settle for only one President for dinner, I would choose John Adams. I am aware this might seem to be an odd choice. However, he was key figure in persuading colonists and forceful diplomat in France that eventually would aid greatly in the formation of our country.
However, I will veer off the question just a bit, because to sit at a dinner might not provide for an accurate portrayal of the debates at Carpenter’s Hall and then more than a year later at the Pennsylvania State House, (Independence Hall). But, to be able to sit in the room of the First Continental Congress during the negotiations to form a united colonial resistance against the autocracy of British rule. To watch individuals like Henry, Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, and the cousins Adams, to name but a few, as they worked to persuade the holdouts.
Then if not stuck at a table simply breaking bread, but rather being present at the historic Second Continental Congress and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, instead of only hearing personal tells/stories. Which would allow me to see and experience the formation of this, our more perfect union. Also, if it were not for all the early maritime diseases, I would like to have traveled aboard with Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin as they sought to procure the loans/funds for the war. But, I will gladly pass on the sickness and/or death part. – Ashton Neely
