Breaking the Mold by Ashton - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

“Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try.” Robin Williams, Dead Poets Society. The unorthodox teaching in this movie have inspired many people and that includes myself. That type of teaching can yearn a child to want to learn. If I were a college professor, I would be an art teacher. It sounds kind of silly and childish when you say it, but look around you. Art is everywhere, from your furniture, your clothing, to the building your standing in.

It may also seem like an easy class to teach to most, but art is a custom learning experience. Everyone sees an object or a task differently. The criteria for teaching would be complex; art is intimate. I would learn more about my students than I would if I read an essay they wrote, answering a prompt.

My teachings would be unorthodox. It is about breaking through that mold we are told to stay in. I would want my students to be eager to come to class and shocked to find out what is next. My teachings would also encourage them to follow through with an idea they may have; that is a valuable life lesson. Make your dreams come true. I have met many professors along the way, all teaching very different classes. Somehow, they all still have the same goal in mind; success of their students.
