Embracing Diverse Coaching Styles: An Unexpected Journey of Growth by Ashlyn - March 2024 Scholarship Essay
In the dynamic world of sports, encountering diverse coaching styles is not uncommon. My journey in volleyball took an unexpected turn when I found myself working closely with a coach whose approach was decidedly more laid-back and relaxed compared to my meticulous and Type-A personality. Initially, the stark contrast in our coaching philosophies seemed daunting, especially as a first year coach, but as I delved deeper into our collaboration, I realised the profound impact it had on my learning and growth as a new coach and as an individual.
Coach Kyndall embodied a coaching style characterised by flexibility, spontaneity, and a relaxed demeanour. Unlike my previous experiences with coaches who meticulously planned every practice session down to the minute, she approached each training session with an open mind and a willingness to figure out practices in response to the needs and dynamics of the team in real-time. While I, accustomed to structured routines and detailed game plans, initially struggled to reconcile his approach with my own, I soon came to appreciate the beauty and effectiveness of his laid-back style.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from Head Coach Kyndall was the importance of embracing spontaneity and remaining adaptable in the face of uncertainty. Her willingness to deviate from traditional coaching norms and explore unconventional training methods challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, think creatively, and adapt my approach to suit the ever-changing demands of the game. Although I found a need for some structure and preparedness in crafting optimised practices, I soon understood how my need for meticulous planning harmed my coaching ability.
Moreover, working closely with Coach Kyndall taught me the importance of balance and perspective in achieving success. Her emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life balance, fostering a supportive team culture, and prioritising personal well-being alongside athletic performance resonated deeply with me. As someone prone to perfectionism and over-preparation, Her laid-back style served as a much-needed reminder to relax and find joy in the process of coaching the sport I loved rather than solely focusing on the end result.
Following her unexpected resignation, I found myself implementing many of the strategies and philosophies coach Kyndall provided. I wrote down ideas for a practice plan, but I still tried new games and drills when necessary. I also recognised how I could better approach players and parents, even alone, in a way that fostered communication and trust while conveying authority.
In conclusion, my experience of working closely with Coach Kyndal, a volleyball coach with a more laid-back and loose perspective, had been a transformative journey of growth and discovery. Through our collaboration, I've learned to embrace spontaneity, remain adaptable in the face of uncertainty, prioritize balance and well-being, and cultivate effective leadership skills. As I continue to pursue excellence in volleyball and beyond, I carry with me the invaluable lessons and lasting impact of hermentorship, forever grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow beside her and alone..
