People who make a Difference by Ashli - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
Teachers are heroes. They use so much of their time to prepare students for their futures. They stay after school to provide help and arrive at school extra early. Some of them even provide contact information, such as phone numbers, for help with homework assignments. They sacrifice rest and relaxation just to get one student up to an A.
In some schools, students striving for success are often left behind because they need help but cannot access it. That is not a problem in the school that I attend. Teachers care deeply for the success and safety of their kids. They sometimes stay hours after school has ended to help with homework or a concept that a student does not understand. A surprising number of teachers are even willing to stay when it is not the subject that they teach. Most teachers do not mind arriving at school early either. Often times before school study sessions are arranged when a big test is coming up.
Many teachers will not provide contact information due to privacy issues. This is an uncommon occurrence in my school. On the first day of classes, teachers will hand out a syllabus of sorts to all of the students. Typically, this includes many forms of contact, such as when the teacher will be available before, during, or after school and their email. In recent years, brave teachers have even begun to include phone numbers and the optimal times to contact them. This openness makes students feel less intimidated by the teacher and more likely to ask for help.
These dedicated educators do not get enough time off. If they have full time classes all day long then there is never a moment to de-stress. Papers need to be graded and assignments need to be planned. Many times teachers stay home over the weekend still doing work for their students. They put grades into the computer for their kids no matter how long it takes them. They give up so much free time for students who sometimes do not even deserve it.
School is always on a teacher’s mind. However, it is not just the school, it is the students whom inhabit it. Many teachers are trying to make a difference in even one kid’s life every single day. For the sacrifices that they make and the great things that they do, teachers are my heroes.
