less than 8 percent by ashley - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I am a first generation latina high school senior from a small town in south central Pennsylvania. I have been a cheerleader for my school since the eighth grade. I am a member of my high school's national honor society. As well as vice president of my school's dance club. Where in prior years I was secretary and treasurer. I am interested in a career in nursing as I know that this career would allow me to grow and help others in areas where they can not do it themselves. I plan to specialize in labor and delivery. My interest in the nursing field spiked when I was only eight years old, when I was given the amazing opportunity to be part of my nephews birth. Being able to see how the labor and delivery nurses made such a difference in how the labor process was for a mom was amazing. I looked up to them and aspired to be one of them in the future. Here I am ten years later, many nieces and nephews later still aspiring to become a labor and delivery nurse. As well to me it is very important to be able to be part of the community in the united states of hispanic/latinos who have a bachelor's degree. Specifically one in nursing. I have gone to many doctor and hospital visits with my parents and grandpa and have had to help translate from a very young age. Being able to translate and connect with patients on another level where they are heard and can feel relief that they are safe is a big goal of mine. I have always wanted to see the good in people especially since we live in a world where all we see on news for example are the bad aspects of certain actions. I knew I wanted to be surrounded and involved in something different. I want to be a part of one of the most beautiful days in a family's life where they bring a child into the world. And just for a second everything is perfect. I have taken many steps such as submitting college applications early. As well as completing my FAFSA application as soon as I was aware it was open. I have spent my whole high school career preparing myself for this time. I have taken honors classes since my freshman year and advanced placement courses since my sophomore year in high school. I have taken classes heavy in sciences and medical touches in order to be sure that this is the career I want, and it is. I went to a congress of future medical leaders this past summer, it only made me fall more in love with the medical field. It made my wish to become a nurse to grow even more and it continues each day as I am reaching the end of my high school career. I was accepted into all seven colleges that I had applied to all for a bachelor's degree in nursing. There are less than eight percent of hispanics that are registered nurses in the united states, according to American association of colleges of nursing. I want to be part of the change that increases that percentage. I want to be apart of the change, be apart of something beautiful, be apart of something to help and give back.
