Memorial Garden by Ashley - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

One of my defining qualities is my leadership, and it made a positive impact on my community when I dedicated my time and efforts into restoring my high school's memorial garden. Determined to make a difference, I took charge and began the challenging work ahead of me.

Until I joined the club, I was not aware of the horrid shape the garden was in. I decided then that I was going to change this. I quickly embraced the roles of club historian and social media manager. I made a thorough plan, interacting with my team members and detailing duties, responsibilities, and created a timeline to have the garden presentable before the spring ceremony. I reminded my team members of our goals and gave them encouragement and power. I devoted my time and effort to repairing the garden and keeping the memory alive of the students who have passed away.

Slowly but surely, the garden began to come together. I was confident in what we had accomplished when springtime arrived and we held the memorial garden ceremony. The families of those who have passed were invited to attend, make a speech, and enjoy the garden. The event was a success and the families were grateful to us for restoring the garden and hosting such a beautiful ceremony.

This experience reminded me that leadership is not simply an exertion of power, but that it develops communication, can bring a community together, and creates change that can make long lasting impacts.
