The best book I have read in my life! by Ashley - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

The very best book that I have ever read for school is a book called The Jungle By Upton Sinclair. I was reading The Jungle during last summer, not for school, but for my own enjoyment. Luckily, reading this book in the summer came in handy for my senior year of high school. I wrote a ten page research paper comparing The Jungle with another book. The Jungle has changed my life! I appreciate everything I have so much now, and it has drastically changed the way I eat and also how I view life now.
Inside the pages of this book, I read of a poor immigrant man and his family’s journey to America, how they sacrifice everything, but are taken advantage of and suffer from injustices bestowed on them from society. This book mainly describes how the Chicago meat-packing industry operated and the conditions for the workers. After reading this book, I now am a vegetarian and only eat organically-grown foods. I read about many of the gruesome details described in the book about how the animals were slaughtered and about the terrible working conditions for the workers. In today’s time, I realize that the meat-packing industry has gotten better for the workers with unions and worker’s rights. But if you think about this for a moment, the animals that are killed in slaughter houses today compared to the early nineteenth century, there is really no difference for the animal. They feel the same fear, the same emotional pain about being separated from its mother, and they feel the same physical pain as they are hit upon or cut into and killed only for the meat on their bones for human consumption. r cut into.o. Ion life. they are hit or cut into.ts mother,  for the workers and thele to buy this gorgeous sitheriThanks to Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, it has helped me realize this horrible inhumane practice and changed my life and views.
I recommend this brilliant book for anyone and everyone to read. Hopefully you will find it as captivating and as unbelievable as I did. And yes, this book may not be newest and yes, the details can be hard to read sometimes, but it is a classic and really changes the views the reader has on life. Its message is just as relevant and important today as when it was written in 1904. This is the best book I have ever read for school and the best book I have read in my life! I am so happy I chose this book to read, I was glued to book for weeks!
