The Dreams of a Person Determined to Save the World by Ashley - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
My only criteria for my dream job has always been that I will be able to help my fellow man. But, I think that I have narrowed it down. I aspire to be a middle school educator, specifically in an inclusion classroom.
The first thing people always say, when I tell them I want to be a middle school teacher is some variant of “That is a tough job!”. They are right, but I also know how many people really struggle(d) in middle school. I know, first hand, how important it is to have a competent, and caring educator, especially in middle school.
When I mention that I want to work with children with special educational needs, as well as typical children, they become even further surprised. For eight or so years, I have been working with children with special needs, at church, school, and in my community. Due to this experience, as well as my lifelong relationships with other differently abled people in my personal life, I have anecdotal evidence to back up the studies that show that most kids can grasp the material if we just teach it in a way they can understand, and give them time.
My plans for my major and minor will depend on which school I ultimately decide on. Either way, it will be some combination of middle grades education and special education. Because inclusion education is taking students who would traditionally either be in either a general education classroom, or a special education classroom, and teaching them in the same environment, it will be important to have a good base in both. Hopefully, I will also be able to take courses specifically for education in an inclusion classroom.
My plans after that are significantly more unorthodox. Keep in mind that I want to do everything in my power to help people, which could be anything from listening to a child who does not feel heard elsewhere to being a voice to the voiceless, to fighting the corruption in our government, and corporate leadership. I aspire to go back to school after I have been working for a good while, and transition into educational administration. From there, I would like to begin a career in politics that would naturally begin in my local school board. I want to climb the political ladder as high as I possibly can, not for personal gain, but so I can help the most considerable number of people.
I hope to educate and encourage the young people of tomorrow and to maintain my morality and humanity while working towards its betterment in every arena I enter. My dream job is to make the world a better place for those who will inhabit it after us. I have only ever wanted to help others, and I believe that I have found an effective plan to do this.
