Reaching the impossible by Ashley - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
As we stroll along the stepping stones of our lives, there are many moments that we are in idle, and very few that make us feel alive. The moments that make us feel alive are the moments we remember most, the moments that take our breath away. Throughout life, metaphorically, I have been knocked down, beaten to the ground, and held under water to the point where I felt like I was drowning, all for things that were of my own doing. The first time I felt like I was brought back to life was when I realized that the impossible is worth trying.
The most important lesson I have learned from a teacher is the reason we fall is to learn how to pick ourselves back up. He was my high school English teacher, and he gave us lots of lessons to take when we were released into the world. The more times we pick ourselves up, the stronger we are to be able to stand on our own two feet. I have been to the point where I thought I was too old to go back to school, that maybe I couldn’t learn as well as I used to, but learning is a lifelong process. It is the only way to make less mistakes and to teach our children the things we’ve learned through experience.
I often think of the lessons he taught us during our senior year of high school and understand now that he was right. If you add experience and lessons learned after mistakes, the impossible becomes possible. Never back down, never give up, and never stand in your own way…That’s what champions are made of!
