Board Horizons by Ashley - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
In my defense, I believe studying abroad should be required to open the student’s horizons to the unknown. An engineer named Anuj Somany once said “The surrounding environment is the best erudite master to teach us the fundamental laws of nature and the basics of living life”. In order to achieve the maximum full potential of the necessary requirements to understand life, studying abroad is essential to self development of an individual. Once the surroundings of college become comfortable, it's imperative to continuously challenge one’s self and learn new life skills.
Being in an unfamiliar environment gives one the chance to learn how to adapt and survive. This skill of adaptation will serve as an advantage in any work or school environment, by allowing for one to catch on more quickly and being successful in the task at hand. Not only does one learn to adapt and survive, but being in a different situation allows for one to thrive on originality and gives one time to discover their true potential self.
One of the main purposes of college is learning who you are and surviving. By taking a chance in college to study abroad and being in a unique, unfamiliar situation, it is extremely beneficial to one’s mind, soul and spirit. One would be given the opportunity to do something that one would normally not do. In addition, learning about the history of your location of abroad, and being competent of seeing these items of significant historic value would be extremely magnificent. Therefore, to conclude, I believe study abroad should be required, since it contributes to one’s education and self development.
