Historical Dinner Date by Ashleigh - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Dinner with a best friend or a significant other has the potential to be an amazing time, but what if you could go with a historical person. Would it be a founding father of our nation? Maybe an Inventor? How about someone who changed how things were done? What if the person was all three of those things, Like Benjamin Franklin.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding fathers of the United States. He helped draft the Declaration of independence. If I had dinner with him I would ask him what life was like back then. He would get to see where his inventions have gone to today. He was one of the people that signed a treaty with England that ended the revolutionary war. This is something that I would love to hear more about. What was it like just signing a piece of paper to be done with a war? How did you come to an agreement? I could learn more about history at dinner with Benjamin Franklin.

In my mind, he was a brilliant man. His mind was so fascinating with all the inventions from the Franklin stove to bifocals to the odometer that he created. He didn't just invent one type of thing he went outside the box and tried to make everything just a tiny bit better. A tiny bit more productive like his stove; it heated up the home you could use it and it did not leak smoke into the home. I would want to know if there were things that he would have liked to build but didn't get a chance to or maybe ask if people thought that he was strange for inventing things that didn't have a use and people got along without. Figure out what drove his passion to invent.

Benjamin Franklin was an amazing person that has had a huge impact on our nation and the world. Without him we may not have the things we have. He created a lot of stepping stones in the future that would allow us to create and invent what we have. That's why I think he is the perfect candidate to have a historical date with.
