More Than Just Numbers by Ashia - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Education has always been as essential aspect in my life. From the time I was five years, I would use my dolls and teddy bears as students and teach them as if they were truly my students. If the roles were reversed the academic subject, I would love to teach would be mathematics. Mathematics has my heart, and I always excel no matter whether it be algebra, geometry, or calculus. When I made my first “c” on my math exam in my MH 113 course (pre-calculus) my heart was broken into a million piece. Although, my major is not mathematics there have been numerous times where I wanted to reconsider it. It would make me so furious in grade school when others, would say when will we ever need these math problems again. But little do they know, math is used in life every day. Whether it be calculating how much gas you need to put in your car, or the amount of ingredients that needs to be placed in your food.
I would love to teach mathematics because students need to understand, that this is a subject that will not just go away after a person leaves grade school. No matter what major you may decide to pursue, there will be at least one math class listed in your required courses. I have had some math teachers who taught, just to get a check. This required me to go home and have to teach myself, which as a student is not my responsibly. This is another reason why I would love to teach mathematics, for students to know that I am not there just for a check put to help them know why y=x although they are two different numbers.
