Stepping In My Own by Ashanti - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Ashanti Agee, a rising Junior at Michigan State University, majoring in Psychology with a current GPA of 2.57. I am writing to express my interest in the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest. Understanding the value of education and the role it plays in personal development and societal evolution, I am excited about this opportunity and the potential financial support in my academic journey.
As a black woman enrolled in a psychology graduate course, I have always been aware and conscious of the diverse mental health issues that plague our society, notably the often unaddressed crisis in the black community. While I am proud to attend Michigan State University, my college experience has not been without its share of challenges. The journey has augmented my perseverance and resilience, qualities I believe are foundational to enduring and succeeding in both educational and societal stratospheres.
Despite the difficulties encountered, I let neither my race, gender, or GPA be a deterrent. Instead, I fervently dive into my studies, seeking to learn, understand, and use my acquired knowledge to implement change in the black community, starting with mental health awareness. My dedication and knowledge in my field, coupled with my resolve and vision for change, accentuate my aptitude and desire to leverage my education for the welfare of the community.
Moreover, my involvement in my university's Psychology department reflects my yearning to help others by contributing to, influencing, and improving the mental health sector. A profound interest in human behavior, cognitive processes, and the psychological underpinnings of societal issues has guided my academic pathway and fortified my career aspirations.
Becoming a recipient of the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship would enable me to continue my studies unencumbered by financial strain. It would also allow me to fortify my academic performance, hence providing an even stronger foundation for my career aspirations to make a positive impact on black mental health through machine learning, research, education, and community involvement.
I am confident that with the support provided through your scholarship, I will be better equipped to excel in completing my degree and fighting the good fight for mental health awareness and interventions, particularly within the black community. My resilience, drive, and passion make me an ideal candidate for this scholarship opportunity.
Thank you for considering my application. I am optimistic about the possible support this scholarship will offer towards achieving my academic and professional aspirations.
Sincerely,
Ashanti Agee.
