Where I Want to Be vs. Where I Will Be by Ashah - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

It’s often said that education can be the foundation of a successful future, providing the tools and knowledge needed to achieve one’s goals. While this path may not be for everyone, I know that education will be essential in shaping my future. I am writing this essay because I value the time and effort I invest in my studies, knowing that each step brings me closer to the life and career I envision for myself, even in 10 years' time.

I have always aspired to work in the field of psychology, driven by the desire to make a meaningful impact on mental health. I discovered that becoming a psychiatrist would allow me to do just that while also providing financial stability. While it is essential to pursue a career that ignites one’s passion, it's equally important to consider practical factors like financial security, especially in today’s economy. The rising cost of living makes it clear that passion alone may not be enough to thrive. It’s about finding a balance between doing what you love and ensuring a sustainable future.

In ten years, I envision myself having completed medical school and working through my residency as a registered psychiatrist, hopefully beginning to build a family. Achieving this goal requires dedication to my education — earning both a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate will lay the foundation for the knowledge I need to excel in my field. This education will not only help me to become a certified psychiatrist but will also empower me to support my future family both emotionally and financially, reinforcing the importance of mental well-being in every aspect of life.

However, I recognize that life is unpredictable. This doesn’t mean I won’t give my all to achieve my goals, but rather that I understand the importance of resilience. Life can present unexpected challenges, and sometimes plans need to shift. Where I want to be in 10 years can be very different from where I actually will be because I, myself, can't predict what will happen. Yet, having a vision and working toward it demonstrates determination and maturity. And if life leads me down a different path, I trust that it might be toward an opportunity I hadn’t anticipated — possibly one even better than what I initially imagined.

Ultimately, having a plan provides direction, but being adaptable ensures that no matter where life takes me, I can find purpose and fulfillment. My commitment to mental health, personal growth, and balancing passion with practicality will guide me through whatever the future holds.
