Choosing Kindness by Aryen - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
When it comes to New Years resolutions, lets be honest. No one actually sticks to the plan. That trip to the gym, and the twenty dollars you happily put in to your savings will be nothing but an old memory after January 2nd. With all of my failed resolutions in mind, I decided to try something new this year. After cringing through post after post of, “New Year, new me!” I determined that, rather than change something about myself, I could work on a personal quality that I admire, and make it better.
From an early age, I understood the importance of displaying nothing but kindness and happiness. This year, I will build on the quality, and radiate a genuine love for everyone. Rather than just strike up a conversation with someone considered, “unpopular,” I will sit with them and make them feel included. I will push judgments and stereotypes aside, and genuinely embrace the good in each and every person.
A person who is cynical may see the world, “how it truly is,” but I see the world as something much more. It is a wonderfully beautiful place filled with remarkable individuals, each with their own unique story.
Lets make more than a New Years resolution. Lets make a change. Lets make the decision that will make a difference.
