The Four Blocks That Built Me by Aryanna - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
A small habit that has made a significant difference in both my academic performance and personal well-being is structuring my day into intentional time blocks, allowing me to stay consistent, focused, and balanced even during demanding periods of my life. I divide my day into four six-hour blocks: midnight to 6 a.m. for sleep, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. for focused work, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for classes and responsibilities, and 6 p.m. to midnight for meetings, social time, and personal activities. For each block, I create a simple to-do list, even for my sleep routine, to ensure I am intentional with my time.
Although this system may sound rigid, it is designed to be flexible. Planning my week in advance allows me to adjust each block depending on my commitments and energy levels. Over time, I have learned when I am most productive and creative; for example, I do my best academic work in the morning, while I am more creative later in the day. This structure gives me direction without limiting my ability to adapt.
Growing up in a hectic environment without routine, I often felt overwhelmed and unfocused. Creating my own structure has allowed me to take control of my time, manage my responsibilities, and maintain balance. It has also helped me understand myself more deeply. At times, I struggled with feeling overwhelmed by both my environment and my own thoughts, often losing entire days without a clear sense of direction. Building this routine has given me something steady to rely on, helping me stay grounded and move forward even when motivation is low. By consistently showing up for my own schedule, I have learned to trust my discipline and rely on my own strength.
For a long time, I was intimidated by the independence that comes with growing up and navigating college, unsure if I could depend on myself. However, building this routine has shown me that I am capable of creating stability on my own. It is comforting to realize that I have control over how I spend my time and how I move forward. Because of this habit, I have developed a sense of confidence and self-trust, knowing that I am capable of building the life I want through my own discipline and consistency.
